Optimization of Cutting Parameters in Boring Operation

چکیده
In the present work an attempt is made to select the combination of optimum cutting parameters which will result in better surface finish. Machining with optimum cutting parameters will result in minimum machining time and hence increasing the productivity. Four parameters viz. spindle speed, feed, depth of cut and length to diameter (L/D) ratio of boring bar has been taken as control factors. The cutting trials were performed as per Taguchi 3 (L9 ) orthogonal array method to deal with the response from multi-variables. AISI 1041 (EN9) carbon steel was used as a job material which was cut by using standard boring bars of various sizes each having a tungsten carbide inserts of same insert radius. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was carried out to find the significant factors and their individual contribution in the response function i.e. surface roughness.

Boring is a frequently employed finishing operation in machine shops. Boring is a process in which pre-drilled holes or holes in cast, forged or extruded components are enlarged or finished with a cutting tool mounted on a boring bar. The process is mostly used in applications where close dimensional tolerances and good surface finish are required. In this research work based on the theoretical...

متن کاملApplication of orthogonal array technique and particle swarm optimization approach in surface roughness modification when face milling AISI1045 steel parts
Face milling is an important and common machining operation because of its versatility and capability to produce various surfaces. Face milling is a machining process of removing material by the relative motion between a work piece and rotating cutter with multiple cutting edges. It is an interrupted cutting operation in which the teeth of the milling cutter enter and exit the work piece during...

A classical example of chatter prone machining is the boring operation. Turning under conditions with high vibrations in the cutting tool deteriorates the surface finish and may cause tool breakage. Severe noise is also a consequence of the high vibration levels in the boring bar. Active control is one possible solution to the noise and vibration problem in boring operations. In boring operatio...
